The Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence (VPH NoE) will hold the first of a series of VPH Conferences (VPH2010) on 30th September - 1st October, 2010. The first meeting will be held in Brussels, Belgium and is supported by the European Commission ICT for Health / DG Information Society and Media. The Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence is an umbrella project representing the Virtual Physiological Human Initiative set up by the European Commission with a budget of ~ 350 million Euros for the Framework 7 Program. The VPH NoE is also responsible for producing a ‘Vision document’ to inform the next calls for the VPH field for FP7, FP8 and for European large infrastructural actions.

The Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group (IMAG) is coordination effort between various USA funding agencies interested in the application of multiscale modelling to biomedical research. After a number of years of activities, the group organised a strategic planning meeting entitled “IMAG Futures meeting: The Impact of Modeling on Biomedical Research”. The meeting, which was held on December 15th and 16th, 2009 at the NIH premise in Bethesda, MD, saw the participation of a selected panel of experts, including two representatives of the European VPH Network of Excellence.

The talk, given by Marco Viceconti, Outreach Program responsible for the VPH Network of Excellence, presented the scope, vision, and the current development of the VPH initiative. This presentation targets one of the research communities, that of simulation in healthcare, which is considered neighbourhood domain for the VPH initiative. The high interest the presentation received confirmed that simulation in healthcare training, planning, and provision is a natural target application for VPH technologies.
