Researchers from experimental and industrial laboratories are invited to present technical problems for study in working sessions with leading mathematicians from the academic community. Problems may come from a variety of subject areas, but should be amenable to mathematical modelling and analysis. In a week of brainstorming and mathematical modelling there is usually enough time to generate and assess many ideas for solving the problem, and usually some of the ideas are checked in more detail. A full report of the Study Group's work on the problem is produced after the meeting. Follow up meetings will take place later to determine how to take the research further. The MMSGs have served to establish strong links between experimentalists and mathematicians.

Another objective is to improve communication and encourage collaboration among all health care professionals through the presentation and discussion of the new research and current challenges
Multi-Agent and Grid Systems for Medicine, Computational Biology, and Bioinformatics (Leipzig, Germany, from 2007-09-24 09:00 to 2007-09-26 18:30) — by annalisa bandieri
This workshop is aimed at bringing together and creating synergies between researchers working on software agents and grid computing, on the one hand, and medicine, computational biology and bioinformatics, on the other hand, to discuss relevant issues and approaches aimed at assessing and promoting the adoption of innovative technologies in such fields.
ESB Workshop: Finite Element Modelling in Biomechanics & Machanobiology (Trinity College Dublin, Irland, from 2007-08-26 14:00 to 2007-08-28 13:00) — by annalisa bandieri
The workshop will be structured around three main application domains, each with two subtopics: Application of FEM to tissues and implants; Advanced Applications; Using FEM in Mechanobiology;
CIMST Summer School on Bio-medical Imaging (ETH Zurich on the Hönggerberg Campus, from 2007-06-25 08:30 to 2007-07-06 18:30) — by annalisa bandieri
The scope of the summer school is to discuss advances and challenges of imaging and processing techniques in biology and medicine. On the basis of selected biomedical problems of multiple scales, the school will demonstrate cutting edge imaging methods (MRI, PET/ SPECT, IR/ OCT, 3D Time-resolved Microscopy, Optical Microscopy/ Fluorescence Microscopy, Single molecule and particle Microscopy, EM, X-ray, etc), explain their possibilities and limitations, and discuss the advantages of combined approaches. In addition, different supporting technologies (Image reconstruction, Image enhancement, Image segmentation, Data management, Quantification and Tracking, Diffusion/ Modelling/ Simulation and Molecular reconstruction, etc) will be introduced and illustrated.
IX International Meeting on Human Genome Variation and Complex Genome Analysis (Hotel Dolce Sitges, Barcelona, Spain, from 2007-09-06 12:00 to 2007-09-08 18:30) — by annalisa bandieri
The symposium will focus upon the latest breakthroughs and challenges concerned with genome variaton, particularly aspects such as methods/strategies for effective utilization of SNPs and CNVs, functional genomics applications, bioinformatics, population genetics, ethics, and the study of human disease.
ESF Forward Look Workshop (Academia dei Lincei, Palazzo Corsini, 10 Lungara str., Rome, Italy, from 2007-04-23 13:30 to 2007-04-24 12:45) — by annalisa bandieri
The aim of this workshop is to present preliminary results of this ESF Forward Look (download) to scientific communities and technical stakeholders not yet involved in this foresight exercise. We will also discuss improvement to the preliminary report and possible contributions of HPC centres and Vendors for developing, supporting and promoting an infrastructure focused on Scientific Application Software. This infrastructure includes also ‘human’ aspects (e.g. training) and standardisation related to software. We call this infrastructure Complementary CyberInfrastructure because it is the necessary complement to hardware to burst computational science.
