STEP Conference #1

The first Conference of the STEP action was held at Solbosh campus, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) on 15-16 May 2006. Approximately 100 delegates discussed for two days about the Physiome, the Europhysiome, and the development strategy for the Virtual Physiological Human.

The first Phase of the STEP project was to concerned with creating a set of 6 Strands (Hard Tissue Modelling, Soft Tissue Modelling, Fluid Modelling, Anatomy and Physiology, Multiscale Modelling and ICT Infrastructure) the fundamentals of the discussion for the remainder of the project. The Conference had to be organised so as to give the Strands an opportunity to consolidate their respective viewpoints, while enabling members of other Strands to gain insights into those areas with which they were less familiar, to identify differences and commonalities.

The Conference 1 started with introductory talks on the physiome by Peter Hunter, University of Auckland (presented in his absence by Alejandro Frangi, University Pompeu Fabra), on the Virtual Physiological Human by Marco Viceconti, Istituti Ortopedici rizzoli, and on the STEP project and how Conference 1 fitted into the overall fabric of the project by Gordon Clapworthy, University of Luton. These provided the context for the Conference.

To set the proceedings firmly within the demands of clinical practice, it was decided to devote the first plenary session to 3 presentations by clinicians.

The following two sessions were allocated to meetings, in parallel, of the Strands. These were provided to allow the Strands to finalise their collective views following teh Internet-based discussions that they had organised prior to the Conference. The first set of parallel sessions covered the Strands that had a strong physiological theme: Hard Tissue, Soft Tissue and Fluid. The second set of parallel sessions covered the more "horizontal" Strands: Anatomy & Physiology, Multiscale nad ICT Infrastructure.

The final session on Day 1 was plenary devoted to a discussion related to industry, where emphasis was on the opportunities that the VPH presented to European industry.

The second day involved reporting back from rapporteurs of the parallel sessions and an overall debate trying to pull together findings from the various discussions that had taken place during the earlier part of the conference.

The most important output of this event is the first draft of the roadmap. While most of the chapters are currently compiled only in terms of bullet points, these lists capture the essence of what came out of the conference. The vision that emerged from the event is summarised in the definition of the scope.
